My style is gentle but direct and interactional. I frequently use humor to help bring perspective to the many difficulties people encounter in everyday living. My approach is supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental, and my goal is to collaborate with clients in seeking solutions to problems. I focus on strengths rather than weaknesses in accessing the resources which each client brings to my office. I'm interested in helping people move out of unhelpful ways of thinking, feeling, and acting so that they can create more satisfying lives.

My theoretical framework is a composite of family systems, solution-focused, narrative, and cognitive approaches. I am also trained and certified to do EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy). The following is a very brief explanation of these different treatment strategies:

*  A family systems approach carefully considers the context in which problem behaviors occur.

*  A solution-focused approach emphasizes problem-solving by focusing on what works rather than on what doesn't work.

*  A narrative approach explores the stories that people tell themselves about their experiences and the meanings attached to those stories.

*  A cognitive approach examines the thoughts and beliefs that underlie problem behavior and focuses on changing irrational or unhelpful thinking.

*  EMDR uses rapid eye movement to help people resolve trauma.

*  DBT focuses on building relationship skills, mindfulness awareness, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance.
